10G PON brings more possibilities for global operator business innovation

More and more telecom operators around the world have launched 1Gbps and 10Gbps home broadband services. According to statistics, there are already more than 200 operators worldwide offering 1Gbps FTTH services, compared with only 100 in mid-2017.

At the same time, more and more home broadband users are also starting to upgrade to higher-speed broadband products, because fiber optics can provide higher-speed service packages, increasing bandwidth requirements, and more popularized storage and cloud service applications , And increased business competition and other factors. It is predicted that by 2023, more than 50% of broadband users will use connection services at 100 Mbps or higher.

Not only home users, but also campus networks of universities, hospitals, and enterprises have begun to switch to cloud-based services, and the demands for upgrading network bandwidth are becoming increasingly urgent. In order to match this trend, global operators have further increased their ability to connect to the cloud and allocate bandwidth on demand.

10G PON Ecology is ready

From the perspective of global 10G PON industrial ecological development, the entire 10G PON industrial ecology is very robust, with complete photonic components, optical modules, chips, networking equipment and CPE equipment.

Operators are concerned about the upgrade cost of 10G PON and the simplicity of the upgrade process, hoping to protect their large investments in central office equipment, customer equipment and optical distribution networks (ODN). Leading suppliers have developed PON Combo optical modules, integrating the optical parts of PON and 10G PON with WDM1r filters into one optical module. This module provides a simple upgrade path for operators. Operators can upgrade to 10G PON without changing the OLT platform and boards. In essence, 10G PON network bandwidth can be provided on existing equipment, and no more sub racks are needed, which is of great benefit to the central office room with limited space. In addition, there is no need to make any changes to the underlying ODN, neither the splitter nor the fiber.

On the CPE side, there is no need to upgrade the existing ONT / ONU when the OLT is upgraded to 10G. Operators can choose when to upgrade their existing ONT / ONU to 10G based on customer needs, service products and competition.

Another key requirement is end-to-end intelligent networking, including ODN, cloud, customer and customer equipment networking. End-to-end intelligence can improve the operator‘s network construction and management level, realize service delivery faster, and provide a better business experience for more customers. Operators are looking for smart 10G PON solutions to support faster network monetization through business applications with more revenue-generating capabilities and reduce user off-grid rates.
