Comparison of advantages and disadvantages between different optical chips in 400G series optical modules:

In terms of bandwidth, the current research on EML bandwidth has shown that it can reach 60GHz, while Silicon Photonics MZM can reach 50GHz.

Transmission rate, VCSEL is 100M in short distance, EML can support 2km, 10km and 40km. Silicon light has an advantage in 500M and 2 kilometers.

In terms of cost, EML is relatively more expensive. In terms of batch capacity, Silicon Photonics‘ CMOS platform can achieve hybrid integration of optoelectronics, and high mass production capacity will be guaranteed.

400G series optical module solution summary:

The optical module products based on VCSEL chip have 400G SR8/SR4.2 products for short distance 100m; the optical module products based on EML chip are 100G, 100G DR1/FR1/LR1/ER1, 400G DR4/FR4, 400G LR4; based on MZM (SiPh) chip products are 100G DR1/FR1, 400G DR4, 400G-ZR.

Comparing the difference in power consumption and performance between the single-wave 100G silicon optical solutions and the EML solution, the single-wave 100G EML power consumption is 4.5W, and the single-wave 100G silicon optical solutions is controlled within 3.5W. At the same time, the two In terms of optical eye diagram performance, Silicon Photonics can also meet the performance requirements of single-wave 100G and 400G DR4. The advantage of Silicon Photonics lies in its high integration, which can integrate MZM+SSC+PD. Silicon Photonics has its shortcomings and large coupling insertion loss, which requires high-power CW and DFB.

400G DR4 EML compared with SiPh, 400G DR4 EML power consumption is 12W; 400G DR4 SiPhL power consumption is less than 10W. The advantage of DR4 Silicon Photonics is that it only needs two CW DFBs, supports multi-channel integration, 4CH MZM+SSC+4CH P, so it has advantages in power consumption and cost.

Data center optical interconnection DCI demand is growing rapidly. Based on coherent technology, it has become the standard technical solution for 100GB/s, 200 GB/s, and 400 GB/s long-distance transmission. From the initial solution for ultra-long distance to the metropolitan area network the transmission market of the access network and the high-speed interconnection market between data centers, which has been of special concern in recent years, has been rapidly advancing the 400G ZR standard, and ZR+ is advancing
