As the energy economy shifts to a more distributed and competitive model, utility investment in fiber-optic networks is growing. Smart grid investments and applications will be optimized as a result of access to high-capacity optical networks, and there will be many new revenue opportunities.
According to a new report from Navigant Research, fiber-optic networks throughout the utility sector are strategic priorities for long-term success.
According to the report, utilities should not exclude fiber networks based solely on cost. Instead, Navigant Research recommends that utility companies proactively develop a future-oriented fiber-optic network strategy, partner with nearby utility companies or telephone companies, consider retail broadband strategies, and prepare for competition with existing suppliers.
