Why DCI and ISP choose QSFP28 ZR4 80km?
798 2022-04-16
100GE QSFP28 ZR4 module support 80km based on SM fiber without any external EDFA or DCM, low power consumption and good optical budget, solution is dedicated for metro and DCI scenario, transceiver can be used in most legacy switches, routers and transmission equipment for p2p applications.

QSFP28 ZR4 integrates the receiver and transmit path on one module. On the Tx side, 4 LAN-WDM lasers are used 1296 nm,1300nm,1305nm and 1309nm, the optical signals are multiplexed to SM mode fiber. On the receiver side, four lanes of optical data streams are amplified by internal SOA, then the optical signal are de-multiplexed and recovered by PIN detectors.

The QSFP28 is the smallest commercially available 100G  transceiver, it’s much smaller compare to CFP/CFP2 that are currently used for long distance transmission, dedicated line card is necessary because of the big power consumption, large size of CFP/CFP2 modules. Coherent technology adopts advanced modulation, it requires sophisticated coherent detection on Rx side and DSP to correct the dispersion. For longer distances, there are also QSFP28 DWDM using PAM4 technology, however, the PAM4 requires EDFA for even very short distances, for any distance over 5 ~ 6km, needs DCM, with this complicated set-up it can handle data traffic up to 80km. All above limits coherent CFP/CFP2 and DWDM QSFP28 PAM4 applications especially by middle and small size DCI and ISP operators.

HTF newly developed plug and play QSFP28 ZR4 can solve the problem of connecting switches/routers between data centers or other distant locations, without deploying complicated coherent solutions or using external EDFA or DCM modules.
