DWDM Tunable Optical Module is an optical module that uses Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology and supports wavelength adjustment to reduce the replacement of optical modules due to changes in network structure and to cope with evolving networks, while reducing the reserve of DWDM optical modules.
What is a DWDM tunable optical module?
A DWDM Tunable Module is a unique optical module that allows you to select the channel or ‘colour‘ of the laser emission. Simply put, most DWDM systems typically use optical modules with a fixed wavelength, but a Tunable Module has the ability to adjust the wavelength of the optical module at any time to meet the needs of different applications. It is important to note that the wavelength adjustment function of DWDM tunable modules is only used in DWDM systems. Currently, the market for tunable modules mainly includes 10G SFP+, 10G XFP
The difference between DWDM tunable modules and standard DWDM optical modules
1) Wavelengths
The wavelength of 10G conventional SFP+ DWDM optical module is fixed, while 10G SFP+ DWDM Tunable optical module can be configured to output different DWDM wavelengths, wavelength tunable optical module has the feature of flexible selection of working wavelength, which has very great practical value in applications such as optical fiber communication wavelength division multiplexing system, optical splitter and multiplexer and optical cross-connector, optical switching equipment, spare parts for light sources, etc. The 10G DWDM SFP+ Tunable Optical Module has a transmission distance of 80KM and supports 50HZ and 100HZ, of which the 50HZ 10G DWDM SFP+ Tunable Optical Module can support 89 channels (C17-C61) and the 100HZ 10G DWDM SFP+ Tunable Optical Module supports channels in the range of C17-C61. The range of channels supported is C17-C61.
2) Application areas
Depending on the operating criteria described above, standard DWDM optical modules are typically deployed in networks where little or no channel change or addition is required. DWDM Tunable modules are often used as back-up optical modules in situations where the network architecture needs to be adjusted, such as for service growth.
3) Cost
Wavelength-tunable 10G SFP+ DWDM optical modules are more expensive than 10G conventional SFP+ DWDM optical modules, but they are also more flexible in terms of usage. For example, in a large 10G SFP+ DWDM system with hundreds of different wavelength nodes, the user would have to supply up to hundreds of DWDM SFP+ optical modules in order to avoid unnecessary failures, which would significantly increase operating costs. In this case, Tunable Optical Modules help to reduce the need for DWDM SFP+ optical module inventory, thereby reducing costs and maximising network flexibility.
