FBT Splitter and PLC Splitter

A splitter is a component of a PON network and is a passive device that connects the OLT to the ONU. Its function is to distribute downlink data and concentrate uplink data. The splitter has one uplink optical interface and several downlink optical interfaces. The optical signals coming from the uplink optical interface are distributed to all downlink optical interfaces for transmission, and the optical signals coming from the downlink optical interface are aggregated to the only uplink optical interface for transmission. Only when the optical signal is transferred from the uplink optical interface to the downlink optical interface, the optical signal strength/optical power will decrease, and the same applies when transferring from the downlink optical interface to the uplink optical interface. The strength of the optical signal can be the same or different from one downlink optical interface to another.

Splitter principle of operation
In single-mode optical fibres conducting optical signals, the light energy is not entirely concentrated in the core to propagate, a small amount is propagated through the cladding close to the core, in two fibres with the cores close enough, the mode field of the light transmitted in one fibre can enter the other fibre and the optical signal is redistributed in the two fibres.
Splitter types
Splitters are divided into two main categories according to the manufacturing process: FBT (fused cone beam splitter) and PLC (planar waveguide power splitter).
FBT technology is to bundle two or more fibres together and then melt and stretch them on a taper pulling machine, monitoring the coupling splitting ratio of each fibre during the stretching process, ending the melt and stretch after the splitting ratio reaches the requirement, one end of the fibre is kept (the rest is cut off) as the input and the other end is used as the multiple output. The melt stretching technique is generally used when the splitting ratios are not equal.

Planar optical waveguide technology is based on optically integrated technology, using a semiconductor process to produce optical waveguide branching devices, the function of the splitting is done on a chip. the PLC technology produces an equal splitting ratio.
PLC type beamsplitter process principle
According to the application range can be divided into: box type, tray type, rack type, wall mounted, etc.
Box type splitter is mainly used in the ODF rack in the server room, cable transfer box, etc.
